Light the Darkness with NAMI

October 3, 2016

One in five families in the United States knows the devastating impact of mental illness. It is a topic that is rarely discussed and often stigmatized. That’s why Flowers For Dreams has chosen NAMI Chicago as our October charity of the month.

As a way to jump-start our support for their amazing mission, the Flowers For Dreams team participated in the NAMIWalks Chicago event in September. The largest and most successful mental health awareness and fundraising event in the country, NAMIWalks Chicago was a powerful display of support for people with mental health challenges.

For nearly 40 years in Chicago, the National Alliance on Mental Illness has been a support system for families affected by mental health issues. Some examples of these issues include anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder among several others. With a mission to provide hope and improve the quality of life for those who are affected, NAMI Chicago offers a wide range of services such as referrals, education, advocacy, and active community outreach. One way to receive immediate support is by contacting their free Helpline at 312-563-0445.

Perhaps the most difficult task facing those affected by a mental disorder is erasing the stigma that is so commonly attached. Stigma is a barrier and discourages individuals and their families from getting the help they need due to the fear of being discriminated against. NAMI Chicago assists victims and their families with a program called Honest, Open, Proud. HOP is designed to empower and support those living with mental illness to share their stories of recovery.

Our number one goal during this October partnership with NAMI Chicago is to educate you on the importance of mental health awareness. In support of NAMI and World Mental Heath Day, Flowers For Dreams is including a #stigmafree bracelet with the first 100 bouquets delivered on Monday, October 10! Purchase your bouquet today to help start a conversation with your loved one about mental illness.
